On Wednesday, January 16, 2013, President Barack Obama gave a speech asking Americans to support better gun control measures.
The policy of Brood Coffee Talk has been and continues to be not to choose a side on this very controversial issue. But I believe that even the most vocal supporter of firearms must agree that clearly, there is something wrong with the system, especially in light of recent events in Connecticut, Colorado, Arizona, Virginia and Wisconsin, to name just a few.
I know many individuals who vociferously (and otherwise) support the right of citizens to own firearms. I must say that, up until recently, I could understand their arguments a little better. If I had the power to speak to all gun owners across the US, I would assure them that no one is trying to take away their guns. But there has to be a better solution than the one we have now.
I do applaud Obama for asking the American people for support, and for taking a stand on an unpopular issue. Perhaps for the very first time a responsible discussion can be had that will lead to real progress, and a compromise can be reached.
