A video on YouTube that shows a zippy Microsoft Surface RT flying around a set it shares with an iPad mini has almost 2 million views as of this writing.
Part of the appeal might be that its title lists it as a “Leaked ad.” Of course it’s not. Not only does it not show any features of the tablet, but it sends many of the wrong messages. Without going into detail, let’s just say there’s bound to be people out in viewership-land that think the tablet can actually fly. Don’t laugh.
Well, you can and should laugh at the video–it’s funny and very well done.
The view stats show that it first appeared on YouTube on November 6. Later in the day it was embedded in its first site, Gizmodo.com. Soon it would also show up on Facebook–by the time this happened, it had already garnered almost 100,000 views.
Later on that same day, almost 400,000 people viewed it with their mobile device…and so on.
The ‘ad’ starts with a left hand playing the 1938 piano tune “Heart and Soul” on a white iPad mini, just like in the original ad (which you can see here). The Surface RT is placed to the right of it, and while the left hand continues, the finger of a right hand presses on the Surface tablet. Loud music starts to play, drowning out the iPad mini, and the Surface starts literally flying around the set. I don’t want to spoil the ending–you’ll have to watch the 29 second video yourself.
